Champions League: Super sub Geny Catamo sparks Sporting comeback victory

Mozambique national team star Geny Catamo came off the bench to score the equalizing goal, his first of the 2025-26 season, in Sporting CP’s comeback 2-1 victory over Olympique de Marseille on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League.

The winger managed to stay just onside to receive a pass from Pedro Gonçalves and finish past OM goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, giving the Lisbon giants their second victory from three matches in the league phase. Catamo had come off the bench only five minutes earlier.

Visitors OM took the lead through Igor Paixao, who received a pass from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and placed a perfect finish into the top corner. However, the French side were reduced to ten players just before halftime when fullback Emerson received his second yellow card.

Despite a poor first half, the hosts seized on the numerical advantage in the final thirty minutes of the match and Catamo’s goal was a catalyst in the eventual victory. In the final stretch of the match, another substitute completed the comeback when Alisson Santos scored in the 86th minute.

Sporting, currently second in Portugal’s top flight Primeira Liga, moved into contention on the Champions League table, now sitting 12th place.
