Serhou Guirassy discovered his form at the perfect time! Borussia Dortmund’s star forward opened the scoring inside three minutes before setting up the second goal in Tuesday’s 2-0 first leg victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League Round of 32.
Julian Ryerson, who incredibly provided four assists on all of Dortmund’s goals in a 4-0 win over Mainz over the weekend, set up the Guinean for a towering header to put the hosts ahead early.
Atalanta, who recently sold off star attacker Ademola Lookman, struggled out of the gate despite coming into Tuesday’s clash on a three-match winning streak. The visitors posed a limited threat to the goal of Gregor Kobel as the Die Schwarzgelben marched to a first leg advantage before the teams meet again in Italy in eight days’ time.
While the visitors managed to keep the match from spiraling out of control, just before hafltime the Bundesliga side struck again. In the 42nd minute, a quick attack down the left wing created plenty of space for Guirassy to drive unopposed towards the end line. Seeing Maximilian Beier’s run at the far post, the striker provided a perfect cross to leave the German with an easy finish.
Die Borussen’s #9 now has 16 goals and 3 assists in 33 appearances in all competitions this season.

Content with a two-goal advantage, the hosts kept Atalanta neutralized throughout an uneventful second half to take their first major steps towards the Round of 16. However, they will have to be prepared for a rally from their opponents in Bergamo next week.
