Ademola Lookman enjoyed a bright spot in the midst of a difficult season on Wednesday with a goal and an assist in Atalanta’s 3-0 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League.
The forward arrived at the far post to finish from a Charles de Ketelaere cross and give the visitors their deserved breakthrough in the 60th minute. After a strong performance in an even match away from home, the opening goal led to a collapse from the home side.
The Nigerian was involved again immediately after when he set up Ederson to double the lead. Catching Frankfurt on a counter-attack, the former Fulham star sent his pass into the path of the Brazilian who managed to sneak his low finish under Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.
A devastating spell for the Bundesliga side continued when de Ketelaere added a goal of his own a few minutes later, completing a remarkable stretch of three goals in five minutes for the visitors as they marched to an important victory.
The club from Bergamo are now in 10th place on the league phase table with ten points from five matches. Their continental form is a pleasant distraction from a miserable 2025-26 Serie A campaign where they currently sit 13th on the table.
Lookman’s declining form has certainly been a major reason for his club’s struggles in domestic action. The Nigeria national team star desired a transfer before the ongoing season started but a tense standoff resulted in missed matches before Lookman finally returned to action.
He has been a shadow of the star he was in past seasons, only managing two goals in all competitions this season. Wednesday’s assist was his first of the season.
