Champions League: Onyedika strikes in Club Brugge’s thumping of Monaco

Nigeria national team midfielder was among the scorers on Thursday as Club Brugge thrashed AS Monaco 4-0 in the UEFA Champions League.

Onyedika doubled Club Brugge’s lead in the 39th minute less than seven minutes after Nicolo Tresoldi gave the hosts the lead. Monaco had an excellent opportunity to take an early lead but Maghnes Akliouche’s penalty kick was well saved by Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

From that moment on, the Belgian club had all the momentum and proceeded to dominate the match. Onyedika did just enough to make it 2-0 and Hans Vanaken added another goal before halftime. Monaco never recovered from the early penalty miss and things did not get better in the second half before Brugge added a fourth goal through Mamadou Diakhon.

Onyedika stays on for Champions League campaign despite exit rumors

Onyedika was widely expected to leave for a new club in the offseason but the 24-year-old central midfielder remains at Brugge. Thursday marked his first goal of the season in twelve matches, also adding an assist during the Champions League qualifying stages against Scotland’s Rangers FC.

Brugge will host their next two matches from Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League. They face Sint Truiden on Sunday before hosting Westerlo three days later.
