Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed his desire to finish off their group campaign of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a win when they face Zambia at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
Despite having already booked a ticket to the knockout stages, the South African legend said Harambee Stars will be going flat out for victory against Chipolopolo to ensure they finish top of their Group A.
“The game (against Zambia) is important. Some people said that we are in the group of death and we would probably finish with zero points, but here we are, top of the mountain,” explained McCarthy to the media ahead of the game.
“So against Zambia, it is a must-win game for us to finish top of the table. We want to make a statement by winning the game, so that nobody says it was by sheer luck that we managed to get good results in the other group matches.
Asked whether he will rotate his squad for the game, McCarthy responded: “I have a lot of belief in the players, and I believe in their quality, so I try to give everybody an opportunity to get some minutes, sometimes it is not easy, especially when you play two games with red cards.
“It becomes extremely difficult to try and give everybody an opportunity to play, but we try to rotate the squad as much as we can, so that every player can get the opportunity to play, but like I said, they select themselves with how they perform during training sessions.”
A win for Harambee Stars against Zambia, will not only seal first place in Group A but also maintain their unbeaten run going into the last eight.
