CHAN Group A: Kenya wins group, Morocco eliminate DRC

2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) co-hosts Kenya confirmed their place in the quarterfinals as group winners on Sunday while Morocco also advanced on the final day of Group A.

Frustrated for long stretches by already eliminated Zambia, Kenya finally found their breakthrough in the 75th minute through striker Ryan Ogam. Receiving a pass in the penalty area from Boniface Muchiri, the Tusker FC player turned and fired a low shot past Zambia keeper Charles Kalumba.

Despite already securing qualification before the final day, Sunday’s result was important as it will keep the Harambee Stars in Nairobi for the quarterfinals when they face Madagascar on August 22.

At Nyayo National Stadium, Morocco came out on top in a decisive game against DR Congo to determine the runners-up in Group A with a 3-1 victory. DRC striker Jephte Kitambala leveled close to halftime after Oussama Lamlioui gave Morocco the lead inside ten minutes but RS Berkane forward Lamlioui finished the game off in the 80th minute after Morocco captain Mohamed Hrimat converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute.

Morocco will travel to Dar es Salaam for what will be the headline match from the quarterfinals against co-hosts Tanzania.
