Kenya forward Austin Odhiambo has indicated that he needs to score more goals to help the team reach far at the 2024 Championship for Africa Nations (CHAN) in East Africa.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder saved a ten-man Harambee Stars against Angola in their second Group A game in front of a boisterous home fans at the Moi International Sports Centre.
Angola shot themselves ahead with just seven minutes played from the boot of Jo Paciencia before Odhiambo’s coolly-taken penalty ensured Benni McCarthy’s side remained unbeaten in the tournament and top of the group with four points after two games.
Odhiambo said: “I think in the first half before we got the red card, we didn’t stick to the tactics of the coach because they were passing through us easily.
“But when the game progressed more at least we could handle the pressure [and] as a team I can give my team eight out of ten [in terms of performance]. We did our best because the red card came too early.
The Gor Mahia attacker says he needs to score more goals to help Kenya qualify for the next phase of the competition.
“I need to score more goals because if you score goals your team wins. I could have scored two goals and we could have won today so I just need to score more goals. For now we are approaching every game as a team and to help the team to qualify for the next round so for now I am focusing on the result of the team.”
Kenya were forced to play with a man down for over 70 minutes after midfielder Marvin Nabwire was sent off in the 21st minute. In the other group game, DR Congo defeated Zambia 2-0 to go on three points in third spot.
