CHAN: Kenya government sets up Fan Zones for Zambia clash

The Government of Kenya has directed the Football Confederation of Kenya (FKF) to designate six official fan zones aimed at providing Harambee Stars supporters with an exciting, inclusive, and secure matchday experience during the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixture between Kenya and Zambia at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, outlined that the fan zones will be located at Uhuru Park (CBD), Lakisama–Ngomongo area behind Kasarani Stadium, Dandora Stadium, Utalii (Stima Club), Jacaranda Grounds, and Kibera DC Grounds.

“These zones, strategically located within Nairobi’s neighborhoods, will allow fans to watch the match on large screens in a safe, well-managed environment, while easing crowd pressure on Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The zones will bring the stadium atmosphere closer to the people while helping us manage attendance at Kasarani in line with CAF’s requirements,” he said.

CS Mvurya lauded the immense support Kenyans have shown towards Harambee Stars, urging them to match their passion with discipline and strict adherence to tournament protocols.

“We have assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF), that the Government will support FKF to ensure that Kenyans conform to the standards and regulations. The heightened security measures and awareness campaign will enlighten Kenyans on what is expected of them,” the CS affirmed.

He further appealed to supporters nationwide to help Kenya comply with international standards, avoid sanctions, and protect the country’s hosting reputation.

“We understand the excitement and joy following Harambee Stars’ performance, but we must exercise restraint and avoid actions that contravene CAF regulations. That is the highest form of patriotism,” he said.

Following a high-level meeting with CAF officials, FKF, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), and senior ranks of the National Police Service, the Government has adopted enhanced security measures for both MISC – Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo Stadiums. These will include thorough checks at entry points, the use of ticket scanners for verification, and additional security oversight in and around the stadium.
