CHAN: Madagascar coach Rakotondrabe says mental strength carried them against Kenya

Madagascar national team coach Romuald Rakotondrabe has explained how is tactical changes to the Kenya quarterfinals fixture enabled them to  qualify for the semifinals of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Kasarani Stadium on Friday.

Despite being pushed by a sold-out crowd, Kenya produced a tense 1-1 draw across 120 minutes, before Madagascar prevailed 4-3 on spot-kicks, with Toky Rakotondraibe converting the decisive penalty after Alphonce Omija missed for the hosts.

“We put in a lot of work, different tactics. We had to find the best way to beat Kenya. The players put in some massive work and we had to be ready mentally,” said Rakotondrabe as quoted by CAFOnline.com.

“We knew Kenya would be dangerous in front of their fans. We had to adjust during the game, and I’m proud of the discipline the players showed.

On winning the game on penalties, the Malagasy coach said: “The penalties were very difficult, almost broke my heart. It is always difficult to play penalties.”

Madagascar goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa said: “We are very proud to have him with us. He has really helped us in every match and we hope he can go into the next game with the same spirit.”

Madagascar now advanced to the semifinals, maintaining their reputation as giant-killers on the African stage.
