Madagascar remain in the hunt for a place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after late goals gave the Barea a 2-0 victory over Central African Republic on Wednesday in Group B.
It appeared that poor finishing would leave the two teams scoreless at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. However, when Mamisoa Rakotoson’s effort from outside the box as deflected over to substitute Toky Rakotondraibe, the forward made no mistake to finish for the 84th minute match winner.
Both teams had their fair share of chances. In the opening twenty minutes, Central African Republic forward Ange Zoumara had a good look at the Malagasy goal after cutting past a couple of defenders but a timely intervention from Heriniaina Randrianirina, also known as Toky, deflected Zoumara’s effort off target.
The strong start from Les Fauves faded in the second half as Madagascar took control. Another timely defensive block in the 65th minute, this time from the Central African defense, prevented Madagascar from scoring but Toky’s timely finish arrived following a long throw-in from Randrianirina.
In the final moments, Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa added one more goal for the Barea to confirm second place in Group B after Toky submitted a firm candidate for the worst miss of the tournament.
Madagascar, one point ahead of both Mauritania and Burkina Faso for second place in Group B, finish the group stage against Burkina Faso on Saturday likely needing a victory against the Stallions. Central African Republic, now eliminated, conclude their tournament against co-hosts Tanzania later on Saturday.
