Nigeria home-based national team head coach Eric Chelle is expecting a difficult duel as his team is set to face defending champions Senegal in their Group D opener at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Tuesday.
The highly anticipated game, which will take place at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, marks Nigeria’s return to the continental tournament after missing out on the last two editions.
Speaking ahead of the game at a pre-match press conference on Monday, Chelle emphasized the historical significance of the rivalry between the two nations. He assured that both countries will put up a good show for the fans.
“I don’t know if it’s a debate, but I know this is a game for two big countries in Africa. Senegal and Nigeria have a history in football. They have lots of good teams, lots of good generations that play well, so this is a great game. Senegal is a big team.”
Nigeria’s last appearance at CHAN was in 2018, where they finished second after a crushing 4-0 defeat to hosts Morocco in the final.
The Super Eagles B also came third at the 2014 edition hosted by South Africa. The two teams are among the favourites to win the title this time around.
The 2024 CHAN, which was postponed and is now being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2025, features players who ply their trade in their domestic leagues. Chelle’s squad, which includes a notable contingent from Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars, has been preparing for the tournament with a focus on a high-pressing, possession-based style of play.
