CHAN Qualifying: Gambia and Algeria play to drab draw in first leg

International football returned to The Gambia on Saturday as the Scorpions hosted Algeria for the first leg of their African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying duel. However, the match ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw for supporters at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.


There were few opportunities for either side and visitors Algeria were content to focus on a defense-first approach that was successful in the end. Gambia created some opportunities and showed attacking endeavor but failed to find a way past Les Fennecs defense.


The best opportunity came in the 57th minute when a cross deflected kindly to Adama Kanteh. However, the Fortune FC star went for power and skied his effort over the goal.


The two teams will meet again for the second leg on May 9 at the May 19th Stadium in Annaba, Algeria, where the North African nation will be substantial favorites to secure a place at the finals that will take place in August. Earlier on Saturday, Malawi defeated South Africa 1-0 in their first leg clash in Lilongwe, Malawi.
