Senegal coach Souleymane Diallo has revealed why their performance that helped them defeat Sudan to the bronze medal at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), deserves recognition.
The Lions of Teranga claimed third place at the CHAN in East Africa after overcoming Sudan 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal and extra-time at Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Friday.
The Falcons of Jediane had scored the opener in the sixth minute when Mohamed Tia Asad rose highest to power home a header from Abdel Raouf Yagoub’s corner, but Senegal levelled matters in the 58th minute when Seyni Ndiaye’s precise header found the net, after a cross from Ousseynou Seck.
“First of all, I would like to thank the Senegalese Football Federation for the trust placed in me since the beginning of the preparations. It was not easy at first, but today I believe the team’s performance deserves recognition,” Diallo said as quoted by CAFOnline, com.
“It is important for players to understand that penalties are not just about luck. It’s about technique, training, and strategy. Our players showed they were ready, and that was decisive in winning the penalty series.”
He added: “As for the final result, yes, we came with the ambition to win the tournament, but we played six games, won three, and finished the campaign undefeated. We couldn’t retain the title, but we earned the bronze medal, and for that, we thank Allah.”
While Senegal celebrate a bronze medal and Sudan reflect on what might have been, all eyes now turn to Nairobi, where Morocco and Madagascar will meet in Saturday’s final at Kasarani Stadium.
