Sudan national team coach Kwesi Appiah has made it clear that their focus is to make their people back home happy by beating Senegal for the bronze medal during their third-place play off fixture of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Friday.
The East African nation’s fairytale run in the eighth edition of the CHAN came to an end at the semifinals stage after losing 1-0 against Madagascar. Meanwhile, Senegal’s dream of back-to-back titles was ended by Morocco after losing 5-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in Kampala.
“We want to bring smiles to the Sudanese, especially at a time when our country is going through such hardship. This game is very important to us, and we will give everything to win the medal,” said Appiah as quoted by CAFOnline.com.
“We are more united now than we were in the first game. We have learned a lot throughout the tournament and believe we can put on a great show.”
Sudan will be competing in the third-place play-off for a record third time, while Senegal, the defending champions, are making their second appearance. The winner will secure a place on the podium, while the loser will leave empty-handed after a long tournament run.
