The group stage is complete at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after Group D finished on Tuesday with Sudan and Senegal’s places in the quarterfinals confirmed while Nigeria ended a disastrous tournament with a morale-boosting victory.
Sudan and Senegal played out a 0-0 draw in Zanzibar, a result that was good enough for Sudan to secure top spot in the group. The Sudanese team looked more dangerous throughout the game and a lopsided 4-0 victory over Nigeria in their second Group D clash gave them the goal difference to remain ahead of Senegal after ending level on five points with the defending champions.
A victory for Republic of Congo could have caused some last-minute drama but the Red Devils self destructed against already eliminated Nigeria, who earned their first points at the competition with a 2-0 victory in Dar es Salaam.
Nigeria Premier Football League top scorer Anas Yusuf completed a skilled team movement with his finish from close range. Alimi Sikiru added another goal in second half stoppage time after the Congolese selection lost the plot with a red card issued to Charles Atipo a few minutes earlier.
Sudan will now face Group C runners-up Algeria in the quarterfinals on August 23 (Saturday) while Senegal take on co-hosts Uganda in Kampala later on Saturday.
