Despite Uganda Cranes’ 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their CHAN 2024 Group C opener at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole on Monday, defender Arnold Odong remains hopeful ahead of their next fixture.
The commanding center-back, who started the match in defence, admitted the result was disappointing but urged the nation not to lose hope.
“It was really a big game for us. We didn’t get the result we wanted,” Odong said post-match. “As you know, it’s a tournament and we still have other games to play.”
The Cranes were punished for defensive lapses, with Ayoub Ghezala capitalizing in the first half, before second-half strikes from Meziane Abderrahmane and Soufiane Beyazid wrapped up the win for the Desert Foxes.
Odong was candid in his assessment, emphasizing the need to address the team’s shortcomings.
“We conceded three goals and I cannot brag about that,” he admitted. “What I can say is we need to improve in the areas we were poor and come back stronger as a team.”
Despite the heavy defeat, one bright spark came in the form of home support, which Odong acknowledged with gratitude.
“I thank all the fans who came to Namboole. We know this is not the result you wanted, but please trust in us — we will bounce back.”
Uganda now sits at the bottom of Group C, behind Algeria, Guinea, and Niger. The Cranes return to action on Friday, August 8, in a must-win clash against Guinea, who edged Niger 1-0 in their own opener.
Victory will be crucial for Uganda to revive their campaign and keep their knockout hopes alive.
