Uganda coach Morley Byekwaso has discussed the game plan that will help his side beat defending champions Senegal and qualify for the semifinals of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Saturday.
The Cranes finally made it to the knockout stages after six previous attempts, after their dramatic 3-3 draw against South Africa was enough to secure top spot in Group C with seven points.
“This is not a friendly — it’s a knockout game where we must show character and discipline. Senegal is experienced, they’ve been champions for the last two years, but with our fans behind us, we believe we can achieve victory,” said Byekwaso as quoted by CAFOnline.com.
“It was painful to see fans leaving when it looked like we wouldn’t make it,” he recalled the group stage match against South Africa after the comeback win. “But in football, it’s not over until the final whistle. That moment tested our character and gave us strength to dream bigger.”
Speaking on behalf of the players, KCCA FC midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, who will make a comeback from suspension, said: “Tomorrow (Saturday) feels like a final.
“We are mentally prepared for the battle ahead. Scoring my first goal in the tournament was special, but now my focus is on helping the team in this decisive match. No pressure — I just want to give my best.”
Historically, Senegal has the edge in meetings between the two, but CHAN levels the field.
