Despite their early elimination from the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), Zambia coach Avram Grant has maintained their desire to finish their Group A matches with a win against hosts Kenya.
The Chipolopolo are winless from their opening three matches with the latest defeat coming from a 2-1 outcome against two-time CHAN champions Morocco at Nyayo National Stadium on Thursday.
Goals from Mohamed Hrimat, Oussama Lamlaoui, and Sabir Bougrine secured the Group A victory, keeping the Atlas Lions’ quarter-final hopes alive after their defeat to Kenya.
“We will continue with this. We need to prove our targets and we will do that in the next game. This is the reason that I came and coached the CHAN national team,” Grant told reporters after the defeat against Morocco.
“As I told you, our target for the CHAN is a different target. Of course, we want to win, but it’s not our main target. Our main target is to prepare players for the main national team. And it gave me a lot of things to say about it.”
Grant further intimated that one or two players may get a chance to join the main team after the CHAN. “I think two players, probably one to three players, we can get from this CHAN tournament,” he said.
Harambee Stars, under head coach Benni McCarthy, are currently sitting top of the group with seven points, but they could be toppled if they don’t win their final game against Chipolopolo of Zambia.
