Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has downplayed reports linking him to replace Otto Addo as the next Ghana national team coach.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) are in search for a new coach to replace Addo, who was fired following the Black Stars’ unconvincing results during the just concluded FIFA Series which marked FIFA international break.

Ghana had lost 2-1 against Germany, which came after their 5-1 defeat against Austria. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup around the corner, the GFA are currently shopping for a coach to replace Addo.
While Akonnor’s name had featured prominently as a possible replacement, the Ghanaian legend has come out to put the record straight.
“I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy. I’m doing well,” said Akonnor as quoted by Flashscore after the FKF Premier League fixture against Kariobangi Sharks.
“We are fighting for the title, and that is where my focus is, and so nothing comes before that. I was once the coach of the national team. If there’s a link, it’s not anything negative.
“It’s not anything bad. It’s good. I’m a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team. I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it. But for now, my focus is on Gor Mahia.”
Akonnor focus is on helping the Kenyan record champions to reclaim the league title they lost last season to Kenya Police FC.
So far in the season, Gor Mahia are leading the FKF Premier League table with 57 points from 26 matches. They are two points ahead of their rivals AFC Leopards, who have amassed 55 points from 27 matches.
With seven matches remaining to conclude the season, Gor Mahia are on course to achieve their target but must be wary of rivals AFC Leopards, who are breathing behind their back in second position.
Meanwhile, Ghana will head into the World Cup drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
