Zwane details conversation that preceded Mbule’s Pirates switch

Mamelodi Sundowns talisman Themba Zwane has shed light on a fascinating off-field moment, confirming he shared a crucial conversation with Sipho Mbule right before the midfielder completed his blockbuster move to rivals Orlando Pirates.

From Sundowns’ Struggle For Mbule to Bucs Glory

Mbule, affectionately known as ‘Master Chef’, arrived at Orlando Pirates ahead of the 2025/26 season as a free agent, marking a significant turn in his career. His spell at Masandawana, which began in 2022 after leaving SuperSport United, was famously challenging.

The highly-rated player struggled for consistent game-time at Sundowns and even saw a loan spell at Sekhukhune United cut short due to alleged disciplinary issues. Ultimately, Sundowns opted not to renew his contract in June 2025, paving the way for his highly publicised departure to the Buccaneers.

Since landing at Pirates, however, the 27-year-old has seemingly found his footing, featuring in 14 appearances and helping the club secure the 2025 MTN8 trophy. Crucially, his rejuvenated form earned him a recall to the Bafana Bafana squad, where he helped secure FIFA World Cup qualification.

Themba Zwane’s Crucial Advice

Now, Zwane—a key figure and one of Mbule’s former teammates at Sundowns—has revealed he was offering support and advice during this challenging transition.

“Sipho Mbule and I speak; he knows that I’m always there to give him any advice he wants,” Zwane shared. “So I was just happy to see him playing for the national team and doing well for Orlando Pirates because we spoke about it even before he moved to Pirates.”

The veteran Bafana star disclosed the motivating message he gave Mbule, backing him to succeed at the highest level:

“I told him that I feel like he has what it takes to do well and go to the national team. And when it happened, it was just excitement overall, and I’m happy for him.”
