Kaze issues ‘tough love’ reality check following Mabaso’s Chiefs debut

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has sparked a conversation around youth development in South Africa, suggesting that the PSL may be “gifting” opportunities to youngsters too easily.

His comments came in the wake of Amakhosi’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, a result that keeps the Glamour Boys firmly in the hunt for the Betway Premiership title.

The win marks a significant start to 2026 for Chiefs. They currently sit in third place with 27 points from 14 matches, trailing log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (29 points) and Orlando Pirates (28 points) by the narrowest of margins. After two seasons of finishing outside the top eight, the Soweto giants have found a renewed consistency, recording seven wins, six draws, and only a single defeat so far this term.

Mabaso’s Step Up At Chiefs

With midfield anchor Sibongiseni Mthethwa sidelined by injury, Kaze turned to Thulani Mabaso. The left-footed DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) standout was introduced as a second-half substitute, delivering a composed performance that justified his promotion.

Mabaso joins a growing list of starlets—including the likes of Mduduzi Shabalala and Relebohile Mofokeng—who have successfully bridged the gap between the academy and the first team. However, Kaze was quick to temper the excitement with a critique of the local footballing culture regarding young talent.

“I believe that here in South Africa, we give too much ‘gift’ to the young players,” Kaze remarked during the post-match briefing.

Character Over Hype

Kaze, who has extensive experience within youth structures, emphasised that Mabaso’s debut was earned through sustained effort rather than sentiment.

Pre-season Pedigree: Mabaso impressed during the club’s tour of the Netherlands.

International Exposure: The Chiefs star maintained his form during the DDC trip to England.

Big Match Temperament: His performance in the Carling All Stars Cup proved he could handle the pressure of senior football.

“We wanted to see if he can be consistent,” Kaze explained. “He is a player with character; he doesn’t shy away when playing with experienced players. We want to have players with that personality.”

While many young prospects are often sent back to the reserve leagues after a brief taste of first-team action, Kaze’s comments suggest that for Mabaso, the path to a permanent stay depends entirely on maintaining the grit he showed at FNB Stadium.
