Chiefs coach Kaze justifies Nkanyiso Shinga’s eight-month wait

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has defended the decision to delay Nkanyiso Shinga’s debut by eight months, citing a rigorous adaptation period following the defender’s return from Europe.

The 25-year-old left-back finally made his first official appearance in the gold and black on Tuesday night, but it was far from the dream introduction he had envisioned. Shinga was thrown into the deep end at a sold-out Umhlathuze Sports Complex as Chiefs slumped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Richards Bay FC.

The result marks a grim milestone for the Soweto giants: their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions. This downward spiral, which began with a CAF Confederation Cup exit against Zamalek SC, has seen Chiefs fall 11 points behind joint leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

THE ADAPTATION HURDLE FOR CHIEFS’ SHINGA

Addressing the media after the match, Kaze explained why the technical team has been so protective of the former FC Alverce defender since his return from a seven-year stint in Europe.

“He is a new player in the country; he’s a player that has not played in the PSL before,” Kaze stated. “So, he needs first to train well and get used to the league and to his partners too. I thought that it was the right moment to introduce him.”

The defender’s path mirrors that of teammate Ethan Chislett. Both endured months of waiting due to paperwork delays followed by a steep learning curve regarding the physical intensity of South African football. However, while Chislett has hit the ground running, Shinga’s debut ended in heartbreak.

The tactical landscape was against Shinga before kickoff. The late injury to captain Inácio Miguel during the warm-up forced a defensive reshuffle, leaving Shinga to navigate a makeshift backline alongside Bradley Cross.

Tragedy struck in the 82nd minute when the left-back was forced off with an injury. Having already used all their substitutes, Chiefs were forced to play the final 14 minutes with 10 men, essentially ending their chances of a comeback.
