Injuries and suspensions: Thin Chiefs squad prepare for must-win Durban City clash

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has revealed a depleted squad for Sunday’s high-stakes Betway Premiership clash against Durban City FC, with injuries and suspensions threatening to push the Glamour Boys into a historic slump.

Amakhosi head into the fixture on the back of three consecutive Betway Premiership defeats. Should they fail to secure a result this weekend, the current technical team will oversee a new club record for the most consecutive losses in the PSL era—a statistic the disgruntled Naturena faithful are already tracking closely.

The task of avoiding that record has been made significantly harder for Kaze and co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef. The duo will be without the suspended duo of Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa and Aden McCarthy.

While some key names are returning to the training pitch at the Kaizer Chiefs Village, Kaze confirmed that fans shouldn’t expect them to start just yet.

“We have Etiosa Ighodaro and Reeve Frosler coming back; they’ve been training for the past week, but they are not physically ready yet to feature,” Kaze told the media.

The Chiefs Fitness Report

The coach provided a breakdown of the remaining medical concerns:

Mfundo Vilakazi: Fully fit and back in training after a knock sustained against Stellenbosch FC.

Inacio Miguel: Returned to training three days ago; a late fitness test will determine his involvement.

Brandon Petersen: Still sidelined as he continues his recovery from surgery.

Rushwin Dortley: Notably absent from the update as he continues his long-term recovery from the knee injury sustained in March 2025.

Nkanyiso Shinga: Recently sustained an injury and still recovering

Climbing the Betway Premiership Log

Despite the personnel crisis, Chiefs have a mathematical lifeline. While Durban City recently leapfrogged them on the standings, the Soweto giants hold two games in hand. A victory on Sunday would not only stop the rot but also spark a move back up the table toward that elusive second-place finish.

“The rest of the players are training very hard and are looking forward to Sunday’s game,” Kaze concluded.
