Chiefs launch women’s team partnership ahead of CAF interclub return

Kaizer Chiefs have announced a new partnership with women’s football team Springs Home Sweepers Football Club.

This collaboration, which was made public on Monday night, not only aligns with the Glamour Boys’ commitment to growing women’s football in South Africa but also fulfils a crucial CAF club licensing regulation ahead of their participation in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup.

Chiefs qualified for the continental tournament by winning the 2025 Nedbank Cup in May, beating Orlando Pirates. CAF regulations require clubs participating in interclub competitions to either operate their own women’s team or establish an official partnership with one.

This requirement has seen other South African clubs like Stellenbosch FC (partnering with Stellenbosch University Women’s Team) and Orlando Pirates (partnering with UJ Ladies) form similar alliances in recent seasons.

Springs Home Sweepers, who compete in the Gauteng Sasol League, are based in Springs and play their home matches at Kwa Thema Stadium. The club is owned by Joseph ‘Skeshekeshe’ Mkhonza, a former Kaizer Chiefs player and father of the late Siphiwe Mkhonza, who also played for the Soweto giants. Joseph Mkhonza has also coached the Banyana Banyana.

Dr Kaizer Motaung, chairman of Chiefs, expressed his enthusiasm for the agreement. “I am excited to see this partnership coming to fruition,” he stated. “This collaboration is a significant milestone for our club, as we continue to invest in the development of women’s football in South Africa. We believe in empowering women in sport and providing opportunities for them to shine.”

Meanwhile, Chiefs’ commercial and marketing director, Jessica Motaung, highlighted the broader impact of the partnership. “This partnership is about more than just football; it’s about creating a sustainable ecosystem for women’s football in South Africa,” she explained. “Aligning women’s clubs with professional structures like Chiefs is vital for the growth and professionalism of the women’s game, and we are proud to play a role in that journey.”

Joseph Mkhonza, owner of Springs Home Sweepers, shared his excitement about joining forces with Chiefs. “We’re extremely proud to partner with a club of Chiefs’ stature. Their involvement signals real intent and belief in the women’s game. This is also a great opportunity to grow our footprint in our area and continue to build a platform for young female talent to thrive,” he said.
