As Kaizer Chiefs grapple with disappointing results in the 2024/25 season, club legend Marks Maponyane has offered his assessment of Yusuf Maart's role as captain.

Maart, who previously captained Sekhukhune United, was named the Soweto giants' captain at the beginning of the season by Nasreddine Nabi. In his absence, Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel takes over the role of captain in the team.

In the current season, Maart has played 31 games, scoring twice and providing three assists. Despite his efforts, Chiefs find themselves in ninth place with 30 points after 26 matches, with a record of eight wins, six draws, and 12 defeats under Nabi.

The Chiefs legend, Maponyane, made his feelings clear, revealing his dissatisfaction with Maart as captain and suggesting a lack of leadership skills.

“You cannot leave this discussion without criticising the captain of Kaizer Chiefs. How can you have a captain who has no leadership skills? Asked Maponyana during an interview on Radio 2000.

“Like I saw last time, he tried a crossfield pass against Orlando Pirates, and it ended up in row 45. I mean, you can’t do that. You have to measure it or aim it at your teammates or the other side of the field.

“So, those are the things that make you think that, but a simple pass to your wide teammate cannot end up in the stands. That doesn’t make sense to me. There are no leaders in this team, and the reason is simple: you cannot lead when you are not confident, and you cannot be confident when you are not winning.”

As the season draws to a close, Chiefs will take on Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, 10 May in Durban as they look to end their nine-year trophy drought.

In the league, they have two fixtures remaining: an away game against Maart's former side, Sekhukhune and a home match against Polokwane City FC.
