Nabi-less Chiefs squad travels to Angola with notable absences

Kaizer Chiefs have announced their 22-man squad for the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round clash against Kabuscorp SCP in Angola. The team will travel to the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Talatona for Saturday’s first-leg encounter.

This marks the Soweto giants’ return to CAF inter-club competition since their run to the 2020/21 CAF Champions League final. They will now compete in the continent’s second-tier club tournament.

The trip comes at a challenging time for Amakhosi, who are reeling from a disappointing 3-1 loss to Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday. They will be hoping to bounce back against a Kabuscorp side that secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Interclube in their domestic league on the same day.

Adding to the week’s difficulties is the imminent departure of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who will not be travelling with the team. Chiefs will be under immense pressure to show their character and get a positive result despite the recent setback and coaching uncertainty.

The travelling party consists of the usual first-team players, but a few notable names are missing. Thabiso Monyane, who was injured before the Sekhukhune match, will miss his second consecutive game.

In a surprising development, recently signed striker Khanyisa Mayo has been left behind and will have to wait for his Chiefs debut. Other new signings yet to feature for the club, including Nkanyiso Shinga, Ethan Chislett, Etiosa Ighodaro, Luke Baartman, and Asanele Velebayi, also did not make the trip.

Furthermore, Tashreeq Morris has been omitted amid speculation of a potential loan move, and Dillan Solomons will not be part of the Luanda mission.

KAIZER CHIEFS TRAVELLING SQUAD:

Goalkeepers: Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, Fiacre Ntwari

Defenders: Zitha Kwinika, Aden McCarthy, Inacio Miguel, Reeve Frosler, Bradley Cross, Paseka Mako

Midfielders: George Matlou, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Thabo Cele, Mfundo Vilakazi, Mduduzi Shabalala, Gaston Sirino

Forwards: Glody Lilepo, Pule Mmodi, Ashley du Preez, Flavio Da Silva, Wandile Duba
