Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef remains unconcerned despite the club’s current slump, which has seen them go three matches without a win across all competitions.
The assistant coach insists he prefers to focus on team performance over immediate results.
The Glamour Boys were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, extending their winless streak. This follows recent back-to-back defeats against Sekhukhune United in the league and Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round [first leg].
Chiefs looked poised to win after new recruit Khanyisa Mayo netted on his debut in the first half. However, substitute Jaison Clifford found the equaliser for Gallants in the 75th minute, forcing a share of the points.
Ben Youssef defended the team’s position following the match, stating, “I know that we have not won in the last three games, but the most important thing for us is the performance, rather than the result.”
He argued that if the team continues to play well, the wins will eventually come. “When we make a good performance, the results will come after. If the performance is not good, we will be worried. The team performed well today, and we were unlucky not to score more goals to win this game. We will correct the mistakes going forward.”
Meanwhile, Ben Youssef also expressed confidence in debut scorer Khanyisa Mayo, who was substituted after scoring his first goal.
“Mayo was waiting for his papers; now he is available to play in the PSL, but he was not physically ready for 90 minutes. We prepared before the game for him to play 50 to 60 minutes,” he said. “We need more from Mayo because we know his quality and what he can do for the team.”
