Chiefs secure crucial comeback win to boost CAF ambitions

Kaizer Chiefs demonstrated resilience and tactical maturity on Monday afternoon, coming from a goal down to defeat Orbit College FC 3-1.

The victory at a vibrant Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium propels the Soweto giants to third place in the Betway Premiership, keeping their hopes of CAF Confederation Cup qualification firmly alive.

Orbit College started the match with intent, nearly taking the lead in the 6th minute when Thabang Mahlangu’s effort rattled the right post. The pressure eventually told in the 22nd minute when Mbulelo Wagaba rose highest to meet a Lebogang Lesako cross, heading home from a difficult angle to give the hosts a shock 1-0 lead.

Chiefs struggled with discipline early on, with veteran defender Sphiwe Msimango and youngster Aden McCarthy both entering the referee’s book within the first 25 minutes.

Chiefs Overcome Early Scare to Sink Orbit College

The turning point arrived just before the interval. In the 42nd minute, Bradley Cross sliced open the Orbit defence with a clinical through ball, finding Wandile Duba. The midfielder made no mistake, slotting a left-footed shot into the bottom corner to level the scores and shift the momentum heading into the tunnel.

The second half was a showcase of Chiefs’ superior depth. After several saved attempts and tactical tweaks, Mduduzi Shabalala put the Amakhosi ahead in the 68th minute, finishing a move orchestrated by Thabiso Monyane.

Shortly after finding the net, Shabalala was replaced by Mfundo Vilakazi as part of a double substitution that also saw Siphesihle Ndlovu enter the fray. The move paid immediate dividends. In the 78th minute, Siphesihle Ndlovu sealed the three points with a superb strike from outside the box, assisted by Flávio Silva.

The Race for Africa

The win leaves Kaizer Chiefs in third place with 39 points from 23 games (11 wins, 6 draws, 4 defeats). While the title race remains a distant dream—sitting 14 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and 12 behind Orlando Pirates—the focus remains on securing a return to continental football.

Chiefs currently occupy the final continental spot, though they remain wary of the games in hand held by the two teams above them. With the trophy cabinet set to remain empty this season, the “Gold and Black” are now solely focused on ensuring they finish as the “best of the rest” in South African football.
