Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United clash for top spot

The early stages of the Betway Premiership season have seen an unexpected title race emerge, with Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United locked in a fight for the summit of the league table.

The two sides, both with impressive unbeaten records, are set to face off tonight at FNB Stadium in a match that will determine who finishes the day at the top.

The contest holds high stakes as Mamelodi Sundowns temporarily seized first place on Sunday after a convincing 3-0 victory over Magesi. However, with Chiefs and Sekhukhune each sitting on 13 points—just one point behind Sundowns—a win for either team tonight would see them reclaim the top spot.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika emphasised that the team’s focus remains on their own performance. “Everyone is running their own race,” he stated. “We are not focused on what other teams are doing. Our focus is on getting three points against Sekhukhune.”

KWINIKA: WE ARE NOT FOCUSED ON WHAT OTHER TEAMS ARE DOING

Kwinika, who has reinvented himself as a key player this season after a difficult 2024/25 campaign, also reflected on his personal journey. Last season, he saw a limited amount of playing time, logging just 464 minutes. This season, however, he has been a consistent presence in the Chiefs’ backline.

“Everyone has his life journey, and it was one of those to be in that space [of not playing],” he said. “I had never experienced that in my 12 years of professional football, but it was supposed to happen that way. I had to endure that, and that helped me as a human being because it made me understand that there may be challenges in life, and you must always be ready to face them.”

The defender added that the recent FIFA international break provided the team with a much-needed opportunity to regroup and prepare for their opponents.

“It was a blessing because we had to prepare even better,” Kwinika explained. “Before the previous games, we hardly had enough training and preparations because it was game after game. I think the break came at the right time… we wouldn’t have liked to play Sekhukhune two days after another game. Everyone is focused, and everyone has recovered.”
