Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango has rallied his teammates ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes CAF Confederation Cup clash, declaring that the squad is “extremely focused” on securing a victory that could define their continental season.
Amakhosi host Egyptian side Al Masry at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in their penultimate Group D fixture, knowing that maximum points are non-negotiable if they are to seize control of their knockout stage destiny.
“This is a very important game for us. The guys are extremely focused in preparing for the game in Polokwane,” Msimango asserted. “We are just taking it one game at a time and we will try to collect maximum points so we can give ourselves a good standing going into the final group game in Egypt against Zamalek SC.”

The permutations for the Soweto giants are clear: a victory on Sunday would significantly bolster their chances of reaching the quarter-finals. Thanks to CAF’s head-to-head tiebreaker rules, a 1-0 win—or any victory by a two-goal margin—would see Chiefs leapfrog Al Masry and potentially secure qualification with a game to spare.
The mission arrives at a critical juncture for Chiefs. Their impressive seven-match unbeaten run was halted by Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup midweek, leaving the Confederation Cup as their primary hope for silverware this season.
While the spirit in the camp remains high, co-head coach Cedric Kaze continues to navigate a mounting injury list. Bradley Cross, Reeve Frosler, Rushwin Dortley, Thabo Cele, and Sibongiseni Mthethwa remain sidelined, stretching the squad’s depth during a grueling schedule.
Al Masry also arrives with absences; Bonheur Mugisha is suspended, and Baher El Mohamady is out following surgery. However, the Egyptians hold the psychological edge, having defeated Chiefs 2-1 in the reverse fixture last November.
With kick-off set for 3:00 PM CAT, the pressure is on the Glamour Boys to turn Polokwane into a fortress and ensure they don’t head to Cairo for their final match needing a miracle.
Would you like me to create a tactical preview focusing on how Msimango and the Chiefs’ backline can stop Al Masry’s counter-attacking threat?
