Chipezeze issues warning to Bafana ahead of World Cup showdown

Zimbabwean national team goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze insists that Bafana Bafana should not expect an easy ride when the two neighbouring nations clash in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier this Friday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

While South Africa is fighting tooth and nail for a spot in the global tournament, and the Warriors sit at the bottom of the group with no chance of advancing, Chipezeze—who has been in stellar form for his club, Magesi FC—stressed that Zimbabwe is fully committed to the match.

Chipezeze Vows That Warriors Will Compete

The 35-year-old shot-stopper views the remainder of the qualifiers as vital preparation, regardless of their position on the table.

“It’s an opportunity for us because remember we are also preparing for the AFCON,” Chipezeze stated. “We are not taking these games lightly. In every qualifier we played, we tried to compete. So these two games that are coming up are also a chance for us to prepare well so that when we go to the tournament, we know where we are as a nation.”

He emphasised that they will take the fight to Bafana Bafana. “Like I said, we can’t take these games lightly, starting with Bafana Bafana and Lesotho later.”

Chipezeze Reflects on National Team Return

Chipezeze also spoke passionately about his return to the national team after a long absence, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to once again don the national jersey.

“It’s a good opportunity because everyone loves to represent their nation. I am honoured to be part and parcel of the group that has been doing well,” he said.

He credits his current club form for the call-up, acknowledging the role Magesi FC has played in his career resurgence. “For me to be there it means I am learning every day. At the international level, you meet different kinds of people with different qualities… So I am just grateful for the support. For me to be representing my nation means that I will also be representing Magesi.”
