Chippa United head coach Thambo September has shared his thoughts on Mamelodi Sundowns’ fine campaign that has culminated in the annexation of their eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title.

The Brazilians lifted the Betway Premiership title after a 3-0 win over Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium on Wednesday marking their 15th trophy since the inception of the Premier Soccer League [PSL].

September, who won the league title as a player with SuperSport United, believes Sundowns’ dominance in South Africa and CAF club competition has brought recognition for local players and the nation at large.

“Congratulations [to them]. I think what they are doing for the country, for football in the country [is good],” said September.

“They are really putting the country on the map. They are in the CAF [Champions League] final; they are going to the Club World Cup. So they are really doing well for us. It can only bring recognition for the young players who are playing in the league to go abroad.

“Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns, the technical team and the players. The Motsepe family for investing in a difficult [sport]. Football is not an easy game, but the rewards are coming through for them right now, and that’s all we want,” he told FARPost.

“We want to enjoy the game, and for the supporters of Eastern Cape to come out and witness this when Sundowns were winning it for the eighth time in a row. So, congratulations to them.”

Sundowns will draw the curtains on their league campaign with their last fixture against Magesi FC on Sunday. They will then shift their focus to the CAF Champions League, where they will face Egyptian side Pyramids FC in the final with the first leg in Pretoria on 24 May before traveling to Cairo for the second leg on 1 June. Masandawana will then head to the FIFA Club World Cup, which is taking place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July.
