Chivaviro opens account, former Petro de Luanda star Megue scores in Saudi FDL

Angola national team midfielder Pedro Pessoa, best known as “Megue”, continued his strong season while former Marumo Gallants and Kaizer Chiefs striker Ranga Chivaviro scored his first goal in Saudi Arabia’s second tier First Division League (FDL) on Christmas Day.

Megue, who arrived at current club Al Jabalain on a free transfer after previously starring for Angolan club champions Petro de Luanda, scored his second goal of the season in a 2-2 draw with Al-Ula. Portuguese midfielder João Novais, in the midst of a Man of the Match performance, placed a perfect pass into the path of Megue who produced an excellent finish to put the hosts ahead in the 50th minute.

The goal was not enough as Al-Ula leveled the match fifteen minutes later, leaving Al Jabalain in 6th place on the table as they push for promotion to the Saudi Pro League. After a period of adjustment at his new club, 29-year-old Megue continues to thrive with two goals and an assist in eleven matches.

For Chivaviro, the experienced striker who shot to prominence with Marumo Gallants during their surprise run to the 2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup semifinals, his time in Saudi Arabia with Al Adalah has not gone as well. However, the South African converted from the penalty spot late on in a 3-0 victory at Al Jandal.

It was Chivaviro’s first goal for the club in eight appearances, arriving after he came on as a substitute to finish the scoring for Al Adalah’s first victory in ten matches. The club are one spot out of relegation danger for now and hopefully Chivaviro can use the goal to discover his form.

And a West African connection handed Al Wehda a 2-1 victory over Al Jubail in the final match of the day. Demba Diallo, a member of Mali’s Olympic team in 2024, scored the winning goal in his second consecutive match.

Senegalese forward Ablaye Mbengue converted from the penalty spot close to halftime before Diallo won it early in the second half for Al Wehda. Despite the heroics of their West African stars (Mbengue: 6 goals, Diallo: 2 goals, 4 assists), Al Wehda are still recovering from a poor start. They now have three consecutive victories, however, as they attempt to bounce back up to the Pro League after being relegated last season.
