Christantus Uche’s MOTM performance powers Getafe to road win in La Liga opener

Christantus Uche and Getafe got off to an electric start to their 2025-26 La Liga campaign on Sunday with the Nigerian providing a goal and an assist in Getafe’s 2-0 victory at Celta Vigo.

The 22-year-old picked up where he left off after enjoying a breakout 2024-25 season for the side from the Madrid region, who will dream of improving their fortunes after five seasons mired in midtable obscurity.

Uche showed his pace and power on the opening goal in the 47th minute, running onto a pass on the right wing before muscling past a defender and cutting back for Adrian Liso to fire in a low finish. Getafe’s inspired second half came after a listliss first half from both teams.

The recent Nigeria national team debutant put the game away in the 72nd minute when his pace once again caused problems for a Celta Vigo defense that was all out of sorts. Another ball played into space saw Uche outwit two defenders before rounding Celta goalkeeper Ionut Radu to finish into an empty net.

Uche continues to be tipped for a big money move with English Premier League clubs reportedly interested. On a contract with Getafe until 2028, the La Liga club will not let Uche go for cheap after he contributed 4 goals and 7 assists in 38 games last season. Uche and Getafe are next in action on August 25 at Sevilla.
