Christopher Wooh completes move to Russia with Spartak Moscow

Christopher Wooh is continuing his club career in Russia after Spartak Moscow confirmed the acquisition of the Cameroon national team defender on Friday.

The 23-year-old will have a fresh start after falling out of the pecking order at French Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais, marking the first move in his career outside of his native France. Wooh signed a contract until 2029 with Spartak after leaving Rennes on a free transfer.

Originally from northern France, Wooh remains a highly valued prospect and imposing central defender who has not quite reached his potential yet. Beginning his career at Nancy, Wooh had stays at RC Lens and Rennes with 68 appearances in Ligue 1. He made two appearances this season for Rennes, both starts, and received a red card during his last appearances for the club, a 0-4 defeat to Lorient on August 24.

But Spartak presents an opportunity for the defender to receive regular playing time and remain in contention to play for Cameroon at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). After coach Rigobert Song handed Wooh his Indomitable Lions debut in 2022 during 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, the defender started every match at the 2023 AFCON finals and was an important part of Cameroon’s successful qualification campaign for the 2025 edition that will take place in Morocco at the end of the year.

Spartak Moscow have 11 points from 7 Russian Premier League games so far this season. Wooh could potentially make his debut in a Moscow derby when Spartak return to league play on September 13 against Dynamo Moscow.
