Lille manager Bruno Genesio has challenged Nigeria forward Chuba Akpom to take advantage of his goal against Le Havre and stamp his authority for the French Ligue 1 club.
The 29-year-old scored on his maiden appearance to help Lille defeat Le Havre 2-1 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday. With the game heading for a 1-1 draw, Akpom powered home the winner in added minutes of stoppages to secure the win.
“Scoring is always a good sign for a striker. Chuba was opportunistic in this action. He is a player who still has to find his feet with us,” Genesio told Lille’s official website.
“He still has to assimilate certain principles and what is asked of him here. It is good that he scored, it can only increase his confidence and bring us something extra for the end of the season.”
Akpom, who moved to Lille on loan from Eredivisie club Ajax, has now featured once and scored one goal. He will hope to keep his role when Lille travel to face Rennes at Roazhon Park on Sunday.
