Wednesday’s action from Tunisia’s Ligue 1 Professionnelle ended in controversy after an assistant referee suffered a head injury during Club Africain’s abandoned fixture against CA Bizertin.
Shortly after Club Africain took the lead early in the second half through a goal from Firas Chaouat, assistant referee Marouane Saad was hit by an object. With a clear wound to his head caused by the projectile, the referee crew decided to abandon the match after Saad left his position on the sidelines to escape the threat of further injury.
The behavior of the home supporters drew widespread condemnation from followers of Tunisian football with suggestions to punish host club Bizertin severely.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, last season’s runners-up US Monastir were held to a 0-0 draw by AS Marsa while the score was the same between Olympique Béja and JS Kairouan. Stade Tunisien were the only winners on the day with a 2-0 victory at home over ES Métlaoui.
League action is set to continue on Thursday with reigning champions Espérance among the teams in action against AS Soliman.
