Namibia’s Brave Warriors coach Collin Benjamin has explained the thinking behind his provisional 32-member squad's selection for the 2025 COSAFA Cup.
Unveiling the squad to the media on Friday, May 23, 2025, the former international defender said he picked a blend of experienced and young players.
Benjamin said he wants to give up-and-coming players exposure while also seeking to keep regular ones in good shape. The ultimate focus, the coach added, was beyond the COSAFA Cup.
“This is a mixture with an eye on preparations for the forthcoming World Cup qualification games. We also want to use this competition to develop players with potential,” he told the Namibia Football Association media.
“It is going both ways—developing and preparing for the very important World Cup games. As for the COSAFA Cup, we have this chance of playing three matches and we have to utilise that.”
The squad comprises players such as AmaZulu FC’s winger Elmo Kambindu, Durban City striker Joslin Kamatuka, Marumo Gallants FC’s winger Rewaldo Leon Prins, and Prins Tjiueza (Cape Town City FC).
There is no place in Namibia’s squad for seasoned players such as Peter Shalulile of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates winger Deon Hotto.
The Namibians share Group B with defending champions Angola, Malawi, and Lesotho. Only the overall winner will proceed to the last-four stage of the tournament, scheduled for Bloemfontein in South Africa.
There are 14 teams split into four groups, A and B comprising four teams each, and the rest three. The winner of each group will proceed to the semifinals.
