Congo Brazzaville local-based national team head coach Barthélémy Ngatsono has urged fans to ease the pressure on his players ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Congo Brazzaville will begin their CHAN campaign against Sudan on August 5th.

Ngatsono has returned to lead the Red Devils at CHAN and has been preparing his squad since June. However, limited preparation time and a lack of international friendlies have impacted the team’s readiness. Instead, the team has been playing test matches against domestic league clubs.

Ngatsono appealed to fans to allow the players freedom during the tournament. “Let the players play for themselves first and foremost, because they need to make a name for themselves in Africa. This competition is followed everywhere, and also, it is their livelihood. This can bring them money,” said Ngatsono.

Congo Brazzaville was banned by FIFA for several months due to third-party interference in the football federation. Ngatsono and his squad are determined to write history in what has been a difficult year for Congolese football. Congo Brazzaville is in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Nigeria, and Sudan.
