Al Ahly reach agreement with former coach over contract dispute

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have officially announced the termination of their contract with former coach Marcel Koller by mutual agreement. The Swiss coach, who led the club, will receive compensation equivalent to three months’ salary, in addition to his remaining dues and bonuses for the 2024–2025 season, which concluded on June 30, 2025.

The club expressed its appreciation for everything Koller achieved during his tenure and extended its best wishes for his future career.

Koller’s departure was confirmed last April following Al Ahly’s elimination in the CAF Champions League semi-finals at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns. However, the process became more complicated than expected due to a misunderstanding of the contract terms on Al Ahly’s part.

Initially, the club was surprised to discover that, according to the contract, they were obliged to pay the full remaining salary of the coach’s deal, which was set to run through the end of the 2025–2026 season—amounting to 15 months’ worth of wages.

In the end, both parties reached a mutual agreement that significantly reduced the financial burden on Al Ahly, with Koller accepting only three months’ salary as part of the settlement.

Koller was in his third season with the Red Devils and enjoyed remarkable success during his time in charge, winning eleven trophies.

Koller’s achievements with Al Ahly include:

  • Two CAF Champions League titles
  • Two Egyptian Premier League titles
  • Two Egypt Cup titles
  • Four Egyptian Super Cup titles
  • One CAF Super Cup title
  • A bronze medal at the FIFA Club World Cup
