Mozambique caretaker coach Eduardo Jumisse has explained how the Mambas outsmarted South Africa in the 2025 COSAFA Cup opener on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
Jumisse, in charge of the Mambas’ fringe team while his boss Chiquinho Conde manages the main side, attributed the 1-0 victory over Bafana Bafana to defensive discipline.
“We had a good game. Our strategy worked. We knew we were playing a good team with quality players, so it is not possible to play against South Africa the same way [as with other teams],” the coach told COSAFA media.
Going into the next Group A match against Mauritius on June 7, 2025, the Mozambican called for consistency and continued defensive discipline.
“Our group has four teams; we have played the first game, and starting with a win is very important. However, we have two more games and we need the same mentality and fight for six points,” Jumisse explained.
“With another team, we can change something. South Africa is the best national team in our group, and with another team, maybe we can change our strategy.”
Black Bulls FC’s forward Antonio Sumbane’s goal earned the Mambas the Group A opening win at Toyota Stadium in Mangaung, Bloemfontein.
Mozambique will wind up Group A assignments against Zimbabwe on June 10. The Warriors shared the spoils with Mauritius at 0-0 on Wednesday.
