South Africa’s COSAFA Cup team coach, Vela Khumalo, says scoring is the biggest problem facing Bafana Bafana; hence, there is a need to hunt for strikers.

The coach spoke about the scoring challenges during a post-match press conference while reflecting on the team’s 3-0 loss to Angola in the final on Sunday. He also touched on how overall, the hosts fared during the tournament in Bloemfontein.

“We had a good tournament. We played good football. I think what one would immediately say about the tournament itself is that what we are lacking in our football is that we are not scoring goals. We need to go back and work on strikers who can score goals,” Khumalo said.

On a positive note, the Kaizer Chiefs development team trainer added that participation in the COSAFA Cup had helped create depth for Hugo Broos’ main squad.

“This was a good tournament. It was one of the ways of us seeing other players that we need to beef up for Bafana Bafana. Credit to the boys. They were called in a period of recess and brought in a period of two days and started playing. They showed a high level of professionalism. We have a big number of players that are ready to help Bafana Bafana,” Khumalo said.

During the tournament, Bafana Bafana scored in two of the five games they played in the tournament, losing 0-1 to Mozambique, beating Zimbabwe 2-0, goalless draw against Mauritius, 3-1 win over Comoros then the 3-0 defeat at the hand of the Angolans.

Bafana Bafana scored five goals and conceded an equal number of goals, statistics Khumalo suggested a lack of clinical finishers in the team considering that they dominated all the matches they played in the COSAFA Cup.
