Zambia striker Andrew Phiri has promised that the Chipolopolo will give 100 percent when they face Botswana in their second COSAFA Cup fixture, scheduled for June 11 at Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
Zambia kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Comoros, denting their chances of qualifying from the group. The team underwent a recovery session at the University of the Free State on Saturday, and speaking afterwards, Phiri remained confident of securing victory against Botswana.
“We played very well and created many chances, but sadly we couldn’t find the back of the net. Now, we have to win the Botswana game because we don’t have any other options. We just have to fight going into the game and give our 100 percent,” said Phiri.
“We still believe that we will go far, considering the caliber of players we have in the team. We have a squad that can deliver, but we just have to show it on the pitch. We will keep giving our best and strive to give 100 percent against Botswana.”
Zambia’s hopes of progressing to the COSAFA Cup semi-finals now rest not only on securing victory against Botswana but also on the outcome of the fixture between Comoros and Botswana, slated for Monday.
A Botswana win over Comoros would keep Zambia’s hopes alive, setting up a decisive final group clash where a win for the Chipolopolo could secure passage to the knockout stage.
This year’s COSAFA Cup is being used as a key preparatory tournament for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
