The Council for Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) has saluted its record seven national teams for securing qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco.
COSAFA secretariat has released a statement congratulating Comoros, Mozambique, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola for booking the AFCON ticket.
“COSAFA has a record seven nations qualified for the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco, the most of any single CAF zone! Congratulations to Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We are so proud!,” the statement reads.
It is the first time that Southern Africa has sent such a high number of participants to the AFCON finals, up from five at the last edition held in Ivory Coast whereas three graced the Cameroon edition.
The region rarely stamps its mark at AFCON with the 1996 winners, South Africa and Zambia, the 2012 champions, being the only worthwhile opposition at such a platform.
Reacting to the qualification of the seven teams, a fan from Botswana said: “Exciting times for the COSAFA family. Now preparations must start for the 2025 COSAFA seniors. It must be a celebration and preparation for this tournament.”
Malawi, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles are the Cosafa teams that did not make the AFCON cut.
Southern Africa has outsmarted West Africa Football Association (WAFU) A which will be represented by Senegal and Mali, WAFU B has contributed Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Benin.
Central Africa’s UNIFACC has the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon with Tanzania, Sudan and Uganda being Cecafa’s only ambassadors.
Only Libya, one out of five teams from North Africa’s UNAF have missed the ticket with Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia joining the hosts Morocco at AFCON.
