Malawi U-17 girls national football team coach Maggie Nkhoma says they were unlucky losing 3-0 to Zambia in the COSAFA Under-17 Girls Championship in Namibia on Saturday.
She said this in a post-match interview with COSAFA media after losing the final at the Hage Geingob Stadium.
“We were just unlucky to lose the game. I would say it was not our day, but next time we will try our best and grab the title from Zambia. My girls performed well. We did not concede before the game against Zambia and this tells me that my girls are good. They just need to be motivated to perform better,” Nkoma said.
First half goals from Ruth Mukoma, Natasha Kasema and Gift Marimba won the crown for the Zambians. The Copper Princesses were dominant in the final to make it three titles.
The Zambians are the most successful team in the history of the tournament on par with Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa.
The Copper Princesses have since sealed their place at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup finals in Morocco from October 17 to 8 November this year.
The only consolation for Malawi was that they claimed the Fair Play Award. Earlier at the same venue, Mozambique bagged the bronze medal after beating Zimbabwe 3-2.
