The South Africa under-20 men’s national team showed their immense class and talent on Sunday with a decisive 3-0 victory over Malawi to claim the COSAFA U-20 Championship in Namibia. However, Zambia spoiled South Africa’s hopes of sweeping both titles as the Copper Princesses triumphed 2-0 to claim the women’s title.
16-year-old wunderkind Emile Witbooi was in full flight for South Africa’s Amajita on Sunday, providing two excellent assists in a dominating 3-0 victory over Malawi. Witbooi’s pace and dribbling skills were on full display for the first goal scored by Khayalethu Mzimela and his clever pass was brilliant for Omphemetse Sekgoto on South Africa’s third goal.
Simphiwe Mlondo scored South Africa’s second as Amajita successfully defended their title with ease, leaving little doubt about who the deserved champions were.
In the women’s tournament, Zambia found both goals in the second half as they defeated their South African counterparts 2-0.
A corner kick in the second half was turned in by Ruth Muwowo before Nana Malanda’s bold free kick attempt from far out found its way in to spark the celebrations. Like their male counterparts from South Africa, Zambia have successfully defended their title on the women’s side.
