COSAFA U-20: Zambia women seal semifinal place

The Zambia under-20 women’s national team advanced to the COSAFA U-20 Championship semifinals on Monday after thrashing Angola 8-0 on at the Region 5 Games in Windhoek, Namibia.

Zangose Zulu opened the floodgates barely after eight minutes as Zambia went to the break with a commanding 6-0 lead. Saliya Mbali scored a double with Victoria Mwanza, Bwalya Chileshe and Eunice Bwalya netting once. Bwalya and Victoria added a goal each after break to seal the victory.

In the earlier match from Group B from the women’s tournament, South Africa secured a routine 3-0 victory over Eswatini to move back into contention for the semifinals after an opening match defeat to Zambia.

Not wishing to be outshone by their female counterparts, Zambia men’s side also inched closer to the the last-four stage after beating Eswatini 3-0.

Gabriel Phiri put his side ahead in the Group B game, Billy Daka added the second goal before Kelvin Chipelu completed the rout inside 30 minutes.

There was also a win for the boys of South Africa who saw off Botswana 3-0.

Selwyn Stevens’ tap-in and Bokamoso Mokokosi’s second and Omphemetse Sekgoto added a third to complete the job.

Group A will be concluded in the men’s competition on Tuesday, with three teams still in the running for two places.
