Coupe du Trône: AS FAR and RS Berkane advance to quarterfinals despite red cards

Two of Morocco’s top clubs, AS FAR and newly crowned Botola Pro champions RS Berkane, are through to the Round of 16 of the nation’s Coupe du Trône after victories this week.

Berkane, who won Morocco’s top flight by a lopsided margin, continue to succeed while competing in three different competitions. RSB won 1-0 at IR Tanger on Thursday with Oussama Lamlioui scoring the only goal just before halftime. Lamlioui was issued a red card early in the second half but the Orange Boys held on to advance.

AS FAR continue to be involved in a fierce battle for second place in the Botola Pro and qualification for next season’s CAF Champions League. Meanwhile, the Royal Army club joined RSB in the Round of 16 after a 2-1 victory over fellow top division side Maghreb Fez.

Khalid Aït Ouarkhane and Abdelfettah Hadraf scored in the first half for AS FAR, who held off a late second half charge from MAS after AS FAR defender Fallou Mendy was expelled at the end of the first half.

In the remainder of the matches from Wednesday, second tier sides Youssoufia Berrechid and Kawkab Marrakech advanced while Botola Pro relegation fighters Chabab Salmi required extra time to defeat Botola 2 club Chabab Benguerir.

Action continues tomorrow and through the weekend with the most intriguing match taking place on Friday between top Botola Pro sides Wydad AC and FUS Rabat. Raja Casablanca will host second tier Raja Beni Mellal on Saturday.
