According to BBC football journalist Nizaar Kinsella, Coventry City is desperate to complete the deal before the end of the current transfer window.
Onyeka has struggled for regular playing time at Brentford this season, making nine appearances in all competitions for the Bees, yet he has still to start a game in the Premier League.
Kinsella stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Coventry is currently ahead of fellow Championship club Sheffield United in the pursuit of the 2026 AFCON bronze medalist.
“Coventry City are leading the race to sign Frank Onyeka with Sheffield United also believed to be interested. Expected to progress in the next 24 hours.”
The 28-year-old is eager for more regular playing time, prompting his desire to seek a move elsewhere. Brentford is reportedly open to either selling or loaning him out, with a fee in the region of £7m to £8m said to be enough for the Bees to consider a permanent sale.
The London club is also open to loaning him out for the remainder of the season.
Onyeka spent the previous campaign on loan with German side FC Augsburg.
Other Championship clubs, including Birmingham City and Sheffield United, have also been linked with a move for the midfielder.
