Crisis at Saint George SA: board member Dawit Wubeshet set to resign

Saint George SA board member and head of the marketing division, Dawit Wubeshet, has hinted at his imminent resignation from the record Ethiopian Premier League champions. Saint George is going through a rough patch due to an ongoing feud between two rival board members. Wubeshet has been active at the club in recent years, supporting chairman Abenet Gebremeskel’s camp.

Wubeshet told Meri Podcast that his time as a board member has come to an end. “My tenure as a board member has ended. I have done all that I can for this club. I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone. The work I have done speaks for itself. I no longer wish to continue as a board member,” said Wubeshet.

Wubeshet has served as a board member for the past eight years. The recent rift between the club’s patron, Mohammed Hussein Ali Al-Amoudi, and Gebremeskel has had a significant impact on the financial stability of Saint George. It is not yet known whether other board members will follow in Wubeshet’s footsteps and resign from the board.

Fans are calling for a general assembly to be convened by the club as financial woes persist. Some sections of the fan base want the club to be handed over to board members affiliated with Al-Amoudi, an Ethiopian-born Saudi billionaire. The club finished the 2024/25 season in sixth place with 52 points.

Pan-Africa Football understands that the Ethiopian giants reportedly owe their players three months’ worth of salaries. The club is expected to address these issues in the coming weeks, but calls for a change in club leadership are growing.
